Brighton Homegrown: Kovak

Shakedown is almost upon us and the recent Showcase at the Concorde 2 gave us a taster of Brighton’s brightest breakthrough talent. From superstars to rising stars, Shakedown is packed full to the brim with shining talent – and one very bright and shiny four piece are electro-pop groove makers Kovak.

Think disco lights, hipster cool, electro grooves and music so infectious you can’t help but dance. Kovak have just finished shooting the video for single ‘Killer Boots’ and if Annelies’ wardrobe is anything to go by, it’s going to be a stylish fusion of glamour and good music.

Kovak are vocalist and lively lass Annelies Van De Velde, with Martin White on synths, Darren Bray on drums and guitarist and vocalist Karl Bray. The fantastic four have been putting the finishing touches on their second album this summer, returning to the haunted 15th century house on the Isle of Wight to record with legendary dance producer Andy Gray, who has previously worked with Paul Oakenfold, Gary Numan and more. Hopefully we’ll be hearing some of the big tunes they’ve been making when they hit the main stage at Shakedown next week!

Spending time in the studio means they’ve had to put their successful electro-dance night ‘Club Kovak’ on hold recently but they promise that we can expect it to return very soon. Previous DJ guests have included The Orb and fellow Brightonians The Go! Team to name but a few.

We sat down with Kovak ahead of their homecoming Shakedown set to chat about ghosts, Gresham Blake, ‘Analogue Pop’ and what we can expect from their set at Summer’s Closing Party!

Brighton is a veritable live wire of electro talent – what’s the spark that got Kovak together?
Annelies: Brotherly love, madness and a shared passion for running on the spot. I think everyone in the band is a little bit crazy so we get on well.
Karl: My brother (Drummer) Dazza and I started playing together when we were kids and the band developed from there. Our sound gradually transformed into what it is now. Meeting our producer Andy Gray really helped hone the sound on our first album and now with recording the 2nd album we all feel we’ve really found the Kovak sound. It’s more simplified and we bounce off each other, sometimes with a few bruises, other times with feather pillows.

You recorded your debut album in a haunted manor on the Isle of Wight – did you have any supernatural influences while recording?!
Annelies: I don’t think the smells coming out of Dazza’s bum were ‘natural’.
Karl: Yes I did! First album I heard creepy hob nail boot footsteps in the dead of night…no one was about that night. When we were there in April starting the 2nd album I heard three terrific crashes above my head like someone slamming a heavy object on the floor. No one was in the room above that night.

‘Heroes and High Heels’ was produced on vintage synths, staying faithful to the original electronic sound and making it stand out from the soft synth production methods many use today. Is analogue your preferred choice?
Annelies: This is definitely a Karl question.
Karl: It’s not all analogue though the synths we use are. They have such a great organic sound to them that you can’t replicate. Dazza has used Andy Grays Linn drum machine on a lot of tracks this time which has really simplified the sound. I would say there are a lot of bands about using vintage stuff and there always will be, look out for AKDK, Transformer and of course bands like LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip. Most of the softer sounds are being used on more commercial tracks – We’re somewhere in between….Analogue Pop????

Your popular night Club Kovak saw The Orb and the Go! Team among its many guest artists – what’s been your most memorable night and when can we expect it to return?

Annelies: For me personally it was Audio with Alex Paterson last year. Loads of people, great ‘Brighton’ vibe and lots of dancing after the show too.
Karl: The night with The Go! Team was great, I prefer the smaller intimate venues when we do it. Ian and Sammy Dook have some crazy music in their collection. Hoping to book a Christmas Club Vak!

Annelies, you’ve just finished shooting the very stylish video for ‘Killer Boots’ – did you manage to smuggle any Versace or All Saints from the wardrobe?!
Annelies: Ha! I pretty much bought up half the All Saints shop for the shoot so I have a great wardrobe now of sequins meets rock chick – right up my street. But as far as Versace goes.. I wish. The Versace dress I wear in the video is custom-made and worth around $10,000. However, I get on with the stylist Renee Beach too well to try and nick it off her. I did end up with some killer heels though… (hmm there could be a song in there.) I wore Vivienne Westwood and Gresham Blake too, amazing stuff. And we had this huge mountain of Irregular Choice shoes. It’s left me with a real passion for fashion – great for the band, bad for my bank!

Not long to go til we see you on the Main Stage at Shakedown! What do you have in store for all those dancing feet, and which artist is your ‘don’t miss’?!

Annelies: For the dancing feet we have dancing music. We always do, it’s what we do. And my ‘don’t miss’ would be 2 Many DJs, great fun. I snuck backstage with them one year at Glastonbury.
Karl: We’ll be playing some new album tracks along with energetic classics! ‘Watt’s The SP’ are worth checking out.

The album ‘Heroes and High Heels’ is available now – make sure you check out ‘Killer Boots’ – we can’t wait to see the video!

Brighton Homegrown: Watts the SP

If there were ever a band that embodies the enthusiasm for music that is Shakedown’s mantra, these boys are it. Watts the SP have more energy than you can shake a triple espresso at, and as the band charged with opening the Shakedown Main Stage, you can be sure things are going to kick off with a bang.

Watts the SP are Steve Joseph and Pete ‘Yorky’ York, Brightonian lads whose combined personality and charisma has propelled them to places many bands would swap their Mums to be in. Steve and Yorky’s musical fusion began in 2005, as ‘Johnny Quality’. The defining moment was a showcase gig at the King & Queen – with none other than Fatboy Slim playing the warm up set. The King of the Beach Party then takes them on his Palookaville tour, they play on the Jonathon Ross Show and appear on MTV and Conan O’Brien’s chat show in the US. They bring a whole new genre of music to the table, one that Norman tags ‘Dancefloor Rock n Roll’.

And rock n roll they certainly are, with a history that has more highlights than a stadium lighting rig. Back in 2007, Yorky collaborated with Norman on the Brighton Port Authority album, a gathering of musical minds with the ethos of the legendary Brighton Phonographic Association of the 1970s and 80s. The roll call of featured artists included Iggy Pop, Dizzee Rascal, David Byrne and Thomas Gandey, another Brighton maestro in store for the revellers at Shakedown. And in 2011, during their gig at 93 Feet East, they find themselves slap bang in the middle of the London Riots, a situation that forced them to evacuate the venue, save their equipment and heroically rescue two damsels in distress from the chaos that bore down on the East End of London.

The boys reincarnated themselves as Watts the SP in 2009, with Steve on drums and vocals and singer Yorky on loops and guitar. The addition of the loops pedal was the catalyst in creating the revolutionary sound which is now winning them fans of every genre – indie, grime, hip hop and beyond. Without doubt, Watts the SP are a band to watch in 2011 – we found out a little more about the enigmatic two piece described as ‘Primal Scream and Kasabian’s lovechild’.

What’s the story behind the name?

The reason behind the name is that whenever we asked each other what we were up to or what time we had to be somewhere, we would quite often say “what’s the SP?”. Pete said one day “I quite like that name but we could change what’s to watts” – keeping it on a musical tip. It’s also both our initials (Steve and Pete), which is quite spooky, but actually had nothing to do with us deciding on the name.

You have been described by that King of Brighton Gigs, Norman Cook, as ‘Primal Scream and Kasabian’s lovechild’ – what inspires and influences your sound?

There’s quite a lot really from very old rock and roll, Fats Domino, Elvis, The Who, Small Faces, to bands like Oasis, the Jam, Foo Fighters – anything with a great melody really.

Yorky collaborated with Fatboy Slim on his BPA album – if you could collaborate with any other Shakedown artist, who would it be and why?

Steve: I’d love to collaborate with Example, he’s got such energy on stage and he comes across as cool fella when being interviewed – no ego, which is always a touch.
Pete: I would like to work with man of the moment Ed Sheeran, he’s got big beats going on and a great voice.

In a musical career not short on highlights, what has been your most memorable moment in music so far?

Steve: It has to be playing the Jonathan Ross show. Not only did we play it with Norm but we got to sit in the green room with people like Peter Kay, Piers Brosnan and Gwen Stefani – very, very surreal day.
Pete: Supporting Norman Cook in Newcastle, sold out crowd went CRAZY, and I loved it, having the whole audience in the palm of your hand!!!

We’re looking forward to you kicking things off on the Main Stage at Shakedown, what do you have in store for us?

We are planning to have every single person bouncing from the off. The people of Brighton deserve a cool festie. It’s been too long since the Stanmer Park old school days – Brighton deserves to leave a good taste in the mouths of these young festie lovers. We know people are coming from all over the UK to Shakedown and we’re honoured to be kick-starting the whole event. Our set is all about energy and infectious beats so there’ll be no shoe-gazing going on during our set!

Watch out for the debut Watts the SP album later this year, featuring tracks such as ‘Another Level’, ‘Walk it Alone’ and ‘Stop Doing’.

Walk It Alone by wattsthesp

Watts the SP will be giving us a taster of what to expect from their opening Shakedown set TONIGHT (Friday 26 August), at the Shakedown Festival Showcase at the Concorde 2. It’s FREE ENTRY, so get yourselves down to the Concorde and warm up those dancing feet with sets from Brighton’s rising stars Watts the SP, Kovak, Astro-Physics and more.

Brighton Homegrown: Rubylux

There’s a familiar sight and sound in Brighton’s Lanes that is fitting to the city’s reputation as a music mecca. Each street has it’s own musical hotspot, where the aspiring musician, singer or performer touts their talent, not only for the small change, but for the enjoyment of all who pass by.

One Brighton band has taken the musicians’ tradition of busking to another level. Rubylux forged a name for themselves with a talent that holds crowded streets in thrall as they perform their famously impromptu street gigs. Regardless of the hawk eye of CCTV or the local council, Rubylux’s determined passion for performing without permission gave them a platform that brought their music to the people, and success to the band.

The ‘guerrilla gigs’ of the band’s rebellious rise to notoriety have been followed by an acclaimed debut album – ‘Fake Control’, tours in Vietnam and a big festival slot in Singapore and a ‘Best Band’ Brighton Music Award. And on September 17th they’ll be playing to their home crowd on home soil, as Shakedown proudly welcomes them to the Main Stage line-up.

This week saw the release of the brand new and rather stunning video for their next single ‘What You Need’ and Adam, Mike, Clark and Rob found the time to chat to us about being the next big band to be borne of Brighton – the burning question was of course, just how many fines have their street gigs racked up over the last couple of years?!

So, how many fines, and how many gigs?

What we do is rock up to our chosen city centre, and usually find ourselves driving the wrong way down a one way street and through a bus lane to get to where we want to play… So you’d think we’d be getting £1000′s worth of fines. But strangely enough, we’ve been relatively lucky so far. Parking tickets here and there, and the threat of Brighton Council confiscating all of our equipment is about as bad as it’s got. We’re lucky enough that we seem to always build up a great crowd of people, who are all loving hearing some live music, so the prospect of disappointing a large crowd of happy people is usually enough to scare off most of the “authorities”, and when they do try to give us a ticket it usually gets all “panto” and the crowd will start booing etc… We’ve probably had about 20 parking tickets which we have to take on the chin… but out of literally 100′s of gigs, it’s nothing!

What has Brighton meant to each of you in your musical careers?

Well, first and foremost, we all met in Brighton so that makes it pretty important to us! Before we we’re together as a band, we all enjoyed the eclectic music scene that Brighton had to offer and played in various bands separately. It’s what attracted Mike and Clark to move here from Wales. Ad and Rob both grew up in Brighton, and it didn’t take long for our paths to cross! Some of the UK’s biggest acts all hail from Brighton, and over the past few years, as our profile has steadily grown, it’s cool how many of our hometown fans are excited to think we could be one of the next. Last year we we’re awarded the BMA (Brighton Music Award) as Brighton’s “Best Band” which was voted for by the public and presented to us by Roger Daltrey, which was obviously f*cking amazing! Events like that really show how important Brighton is considered in musical terms as well… with true rock legends attending. In fact we spent the rest of that night chatting to Jimmy Page at the after party… on Jimmy’s request!!! The word legend get’s thrown around but they don’t get an more legendary than that!

Your music is eclectically influenced, yet uniquely your own – what would you say is your greatest inspiration?

When we made our album, we we’re locked away in a studio for 6 months in the drizzly North of France, with just a very slow internet connection, and a load of instruments for company! So we had plenty of time to absorb a wide range of each others musical tastes! We we’re lucky enough to work with a brilliant producer called James Sanger on the record… He’s won a Grammy and has worked with the likes of Keane and U2, so we learnt an awful lot from him. So a lot of his wacky techniques and ways of creating unique sounds, rubbed off on us and really helped to shape the album.

With regard to other artist’s we enjoy listening to, I think we’d all agree on Coldplay, Radiohead, Muse and the Killers, bands like that. As the main lyricist Rob takes inspiration from the likes of Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley.

If you could choose anywhere in the world, where would you perform your ultimate street gig?

We’ve always held this dream of holding the mother of all street gigs, bang in the middle of Trafalgar Square. We’ve got a full PA system, drum kit, guitar amps and our own generator, so what we do isn’t busking. We don’t put out a guitar case out for loose change, we really go for it, it’s a show!  It would probably one of the more risky locations, in terms of police etc… But we feel the time is getting closer to give it a go! We’ve played up and down the country, in some of the biggest city centres, but nothing comes close to the reception and the acceptance of something a bit ‘out of the ordinary’ that we receive when we play in Brighton. I don’t even think it’s got anything to do with it being our hometown, it’s just the people seem more laid back, and love any excuse for a party!!

What’s the best / craziest / weirdest present or request you’ve received from a fan so far?

We’ve never had anything particularly weird. Clark once received some dirty pants, but it turned out they we’re his, that he’d left on a bus! He always puts his name and address in them luckily! Haha! Seriously though, we tend to get some great gifts at some of our gigs. We’ve got some fans who are great cooks, and we often receive cakes, sometimes even personalised with our names iced on them! And one of our fans recently got some of our lyrics tattooed, which was so flattering…it means loads to us that our music means that much to people!

Brighton Homegrown: Freemasons

The first act in our Brighton Homegrown series need little introduction. The perfect example of Brighton’s musical pedigree, with an internationally lauded album called none other than Shakedown and a moniker in honour of their favourite local, this dance music duo are an eagerly anticipated must-see on the Shakedown bill.

Brighton boys Russell Small and James Wiltshire are better known as the Freemasons, who launched themselves into stellar orbit around the end of 2005 with the single ‘Love on My Mind’ featuring Amanda Wilson. Since then, their journey from studio to the international dance stage has been star studded to say the least.

The pair have worked with everyone from rising star Yasmin and the beautiful voice of Wynter Gordon to Shakira, Taio Cruz, Sophie Ellis Bextor and the superstar that is Beyonce. Renowned for producing remixes with some the biggest names in the dance music universe, the Freemasons are the go-to guys for guaranteed dancefloor shaking.

We asked the boys to give us the lowdown as they prepare to bring their music home to Shakedown:

Sum up what Brighton means to you in three words?

The English Riviera

Shakedown promises to bring the ultimate closing party to Brighton – can you remember your all-time favourite gig?

One of the most memorable was in our first year on the Island of Pag, Croatia – 6:30am, sun coming up behind us on a millpond sea – crazy 4,000 strong crowd in front of us – felt like the good old days of Space.

You have worked with some beautiful voices – do you have any personal favourites?

There is no woman alive on this planet that can sing like Beyonce.

Any hot tips for rising Brighton talent?

Rizzle Kicks are going to smash it without a doubt – a truly English take on Urban music. Also look out for Mirrors – their songs are brilliant… It’s a great time for Brighton again just now.

Favourite Brighton haunt?

The beach when the Sun’s going down!

Shaken or stirred?

Either way, distressed is good!

You can catch Freemasons on Juice on Thursday August 11th – and of course, they’ll be pleasing the crowd and shaking some speakers at Shakedown on September 17th!

And that’s not all! We’ve got a free and exclusive Freemasons mix fresh from the studio for Shakedown fans! Just head to the Shakedown Facebook page to download yours.

Green Light for New Date on Eve of the Original

Saturday9th July… Sounds vaguely familiar… Yes, today is the day Shakedown was originally scheduled for. But back in May, a decision was reached with Brighton & Hove City Council to postpone the event till September to allow more time to put the necessary plans in place.

Yesterday, the very same council officially gave us the green light for the new date, stating how confident they are in the festival.

So we are now just 10 weeks away from Brighton Summer Closing Party. On Saturday 17th September, Shakedown Festival will rock the socks off Stanmer Park. Make sure you’re there to witness it…

Get ready... It's on!

Launch Party and First Line-up Reactions

Wow – what a crazy 24 hours…

First of all, yesterday morning in the Argus, we revealed the first big act on the Shakedown Line-up. DJ Mark Ronson will be gracing the main stage on Saturday 9th July bringing his signature sound to Brighton. The response was unanimously of excitement – Ronson’s clearly a very popular chappy at the moment.

But that wasn’t the end of it…

Last night, we had our exclusive launch party at Digital. And just to tease you all even further, we released a few more acts: Example, Freemasons, Kissy Sellout, Riva Starr, Prok & Fitch, Yasmin and the brilliantly titled Dot Rotten – tipped as the next Dizzee Rascal.

But just after we came off stage following the announcement, we received final confirmation on two MASSIVE acts who will be appearing at Shakedown. And we can’t wait to tell you who they are over the next week or so…

As I write this, there’s only a few Super Early Bird Tickets left – £25 + bf, so make sure you head over to the ticket page and book yours before they run out!

Welcome to the new Shakedown website!

Take a look around, and keep checking back regularly as we’ll be updating stuff on a daily basis right up until the festival itself.

So what do you need to know right now? For starters, Super Early Bird tickets are on sale now for just £25 a pop. I know what you’re thinking – why should I buy tickets for a festival before I know who’s performing? You don’t have to of course, but once the line-up is announced, these reduced price tickets are going to sell out pretty quickly.

Speaking of the line-up, you might have noticed on the homepage that we’re ONE DAY away from releasing the first list of artists performing at Shakedown.

We’ve already signed up our  main acts, and all I can say is that you will not be disappointed. Shakedown’s line-up is going to top anything that Brighton’s Ever seen before and then some.

In the meantime, head over to our Twitter and Facebook pages, get following/liking if you haven’t already, as I have a sneaky suspicion that once you’ve done that, you’ll find out the line-up before anyone else. Just a hunch though, naturally…
